Today we preview page 4! The battle gets more intense and more interesting as Glenda looks on with great awe as to what she is seeing on the city street where her stalled car is only a few feet away. To say the least, she has never seen anything like this except on a movie screen and even that pales in comparison to the real life drama she is witnessing. Has she lost her mind? Is she caught up in some kind of hallucination brought on by fearing for her life?

Another tip of the hat to the late, great Jack Kirby. Jack pioneered so many concepts in comics it’s nearly impossible to not see his influence in the medium to this day even more than 30 years after his death. His career spanned at least 5 decades longer than that depending on when folks can agree on exactly when his career started. The guy was doing art for pay when he was still a teenager! So in that time he embraced the budding comic book industry, understood the story telling medium and then renovated the whole thing, not once, but several times. One of his innovations of the ’60’s were these larger panels pages in 4 panel and 6 panel grids. I’ve adapted that format in this first issue. It really moves a story along or slows the pace depending on the number of panels used. Jack pioneered that and Marvel, then later DC artists, copied him. Not as much of it is used today overall in the industry and it is missed. But a few Jack Kirby inspired artists still use it today.

Here we go with page 3! The action intensifies and Glinda finds herself going from a desperate, seemly life ending situation to the most unexpected intervention imaginable! She is feeling utter surprise, relief, and terror all at the same time! Imagine the adrenaline and cortisone levels she is experiencing! What she see’s she can hardly believe!

Kudos to the King of Comic Book Art & Storytelling: Mr. Jack Kirby! He inspired the images of the angel and demon with his many depictions of godlike characters in his work for Marvel and DC Comics in the ’60’s and ’70’s. Nobody could draw hand to hand combat scenes like Jack!

Adventures of Men and Angels Preview Page 2

Previously we talked about jumping into a story at points farther into the tale rather than starting at the beginning. Then allowing the exposition of the characters and narrator to fill in the details of how we got to this point. Today we see more of that method of story telling  while the drama of the current situation escalates.

Credit where credit is due: Lest I forget again, you may have noticed the credit box on page 1. While I am to blame for the plot, story, penciling, inking, coloring and lettering, I had the much needed help in editing and proof reading the finished script from friend and fellow creator Leonardo Rimirez. Without his help the finished project would not have made as much sense, nor would it have had the same polish. Mr. Rimirez is no stranger to the printed page. He is a screenwriter and an award-winning author of science fiction, fantasy and graphic novels. His work: THE JUPITER CHRONICLES was a semi-finalist in the “New Voices in Animation” contest and is currently in the top 18% on Coverfly. Find out more on his web site: leonardoverse.com and find him on X (formerly Twitter) @ x.com/leonardoverse. Thanks, Lenny, you are a Godsend!

See you next post, folks! – Mark

Page 1 starts the story with a healthy dose mystery, drama and action! This scene is not the beginning. In the original draft there was several pages leading up to this point in our tale. But rather than bore you with a lot of details at the beginning, we cut to the chase got right to the fun! In doing so, the use of exposition in the character dialog has been put to use to fill in the details of how they arrived at this point in the story as we go. A tried and true method of story telling used back in the hey day of comics.

Enjoy and check back soon for more! Thanks! – Mark

This is the inside cover for the special Preview issue of Adventures of Men & Angels comic coming soon!

To introduce the story I used a scripture from Revelation and illustrated the action. To give the intro a bit more drama and weight. I wanted it to look ancient so rather than inking this page I used my favorite photo editing software to give it a sepia look, like parchment. I designed the panel borders to look somewhat like a scroll.

I channeled inspiration from Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s mid sixties Mighty Thor series when they were at their peak. I can’t really do an decent imitation of Lee or Kirby’s styles but I endeavor to capture the flavor of action and drama their work conveyed.

More soon! Stay tuned! Thanks! – Mark

This is much updated final cover. The inside pages will feature the completed art and the lettering for almost half the first issue. By the way, you may notice a few changes in these pages from earlier postings on the web site. During the 3 plus years this first issue was being completed we were developing the storyline, titles, logos, character designs and just about everything. Nothing was in concrete, everything was on the table. Finally we can see the launch date on the horizon!
